Yard Art Family Night

If you're like me, our yard just kind of.... exists. But this week we're going to visit family. The yard is basically where we hang out- adults grilling in the driveway while the kids run around in the grass. So why not make it festive?? (Take a minute to read and comment on this post on the Stony Point Facebook for a chance to win a set of star stencils!)

Photo Cred goes to The Concrete Cottage for this great family-friendly idea! What a fast and fun way to show how patriotic you are! And there are tons of great paint options that are good for grass, too!

We don't want to freak out the Dad's this soon after father's day, so let's first go over some different spraying options that won't kill your grass!

  1. A gentle spray of normal spray paint- if you completely saturate the grass from the tip-top clear down to the root- yeah, it'll probably die because you're blocking the plaint from soaking up the sunlight it needs. A light dusting, however, might now look as dark and you won't see it down the street, but it'll still look great close up and will be fun memories for the family.

(*If you're really worried, mow your lawn after the 4th to get the spray paint off!)

2. Another safe option is that you can spray plain water through your stencil, and then . sift cornstarch or flour over it instead, adding a bit of food coloring to achieve the color.

3. There are also a lot of spray chalk options specifically made for spraying in your yard.

So, here are the basic instructions to get you started:

1. Cut stars into cardboard. A few different sizes are ideal.
2. Spray chalk/paint to decorate your yard
3. Try different sizes or place a small star into the center of a larger stencil to create star outlines or make more fancy stars
4. If your older kids are up for a challenge try creating a cool design

This activity can take from 30 minutes to an hour to enjoy and will stay until you mow the grass or until it rains (IF you have water based or chalk paints). If you're looking for some additional ideas that are enjoyed outside (cause paint can be messy, y'all) here are a few more options for you- I mean you bough the red, white, and blue paint already, so... why not?!
