Gingerbread House Competition

Decorating gingerbread houses together is one of the most classic Christmas date ideas! Put a spin on it by turning it into a competition. You can choose a particular theme to guide the direction of the gingerbread houses or just go with whatever inspires you.

At KU, I made some great memories decorating gingerbread houses with my sweetie. This year, grab some treats and host your own decorating party for the fam!

Do we have any #Perfectionist s out there?? This is meant to be fun- not necessarily a contest- but sometimes you want to kick your design up a notch. If that's you, check out this video on how to make your gingerbread house just a little extra 'rockin!

Need a great icing recipe for your house? Look no further!

Fancy Version:

  • 3-3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar

  • 4 to 5 tablespoons warm water

  • 3 tablespoons meringue powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Yeah, this recipe makes quite a bit but if there's extra just eat it on some vanilla waffers later! 1. So, you'll start by beating confectioners’ sugar, water, meringue powder and cream of tartar with a mixer on a low speed until it’s well-blended.

2. Then, beat on high for 4-5 minutes, or until stiff peaks form.

3. Immediately transfer to a pastry bag fitted with a pastry tip. Cover any excess icing with a damp paper cloth...

4. Then (if necessary to refill your piping bag) beat the icing on high to restore its texture before adding to the piping bag.

My Version:

  • 4 large egg whites (room temp)

  • 6 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 almost heaping teaspoon cream of tartar

1. In a mixing bowl, whip egg whites until foamy

2. Then add cream of tartar and mix for 30 seconds.

3. Add in powdered sugar a little bit at a time mixing well.

4. Once the powdered sugar is incorporated, turn mixer to high and continue beating until thick and the icing holds its shape (about 3-5 minutes).

5. Immediately transfer to a pastry bag fitted with a pastry tip. Cover any excess icing with a damp paper cloth...

6. Then (if necessary to refill your piping bag) beat the icing on high to restore its texture before adding to the piping bag.

**Tip- just make sure the icing is thick enough to hold your walls up. If you add too much liquid it'll be really difficult to those wall standing tall.
